We humans are a planning people. We go from one holiday to the next. I believe waiting for these days gives meaning to people’s lives. We can’t wait until the New Year, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day- you get the drift. No sooner was Halloween two weeks away when Wallyworld, and Dollar General were setting Christmas displays up. And let’s not forget the venerable ground hog day where high atop Gobbler’s Knob, in Punxsutawney, PA Phil predicts the coming of Spring (do the math folks, whatever he sees, or not, it works out the same). The bride and I were privileged to pet him years ago.
Sadly these days are all about giving homage to things or people. I challenge the reader to research the origin of Halloween and go deep into the many things, some lethal, that occur on this eve. I warn you it’s not for the faint of heart (we must keep in mind that candy- grabbing children have no idea). Then the world takes God out of the picture and replaces Him with bunnies and frosty-faced, chubby old men. Now we are quick to honor all type of folk, but when is it the Day of the Lord?
According to God’s Holy Word, He will have His day. To some it will be a day to rejoice; as others dread His day. The Bible tells us of this day in chapter 2 of the Book of Joel, “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains:…A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness;…”. If a person is not a believer of Christ at this time, this is the tip of the iceberg in what they can expect.
But God rewards those who steadfastly believe in Him as seen in Joel 3:17-20, “…I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the LORD, and shall water the valley of Shittim…Judah shall dwell for ever, and Jerusalem from generation to generation”. God will vanquish all His foes!
