Is God silent? That’s what I thought nearly 15 years ago before coming to faith in Christ. As a teenage atheist, I walked outside one night under a stormy sky and asked God to strike lightning down, thereby demonstrating to me that He was real. I expected God to prove Himself to me, in the specific way that I had directed. I expected Him to speak in the manner that I had chosen. This was of course due to the fact that I was stubborn, hard hearted, and unwilling to concede to the reality that He already had spoken, and is very much still speaking.
The Lord has revealed His glory, power, and Godhead to all men through creation. Everything we witness in creation bears witness of the creator. We see design, art, and order in everything. This is particularly true of the heavens and firmament. In Roman’s chapter 1 the Bible teaches us that the invisible God is seen through the visible things He has made. God speaks through His creation. He also speaks through His Word. His law is perfect, His statutes are right, and His judgments are true and righteous altogether. They are to be desired more than gold, and in keeping of them there is great reward.
So everything that God has for man to know about Himself He has already revealed. If we’re humble, yielded, and willing to hear, His spoken Word will take root in our heart. The problem has never been with God having an unwillingness to reach out to man, but with man’s willingness to open our spiritual ears to understanding God and His ways. He doesn’t need to do anything further to prove Himself to us. He already has. We must be willing to look for Him exactly where He has already shown Himself. Then and only then can we experience His blessing and His grace.
