There are lots of things we can say to encourage others as we go through this life. Phrases like, “I’m praying for you” or “How can I help you?” have no doubt meant a lot to each of us at different times. Or there is the phrase, “I’ve been thinking of you.” So very simple- someone has been thinking of me. Maybe that phrase came through in a card, a text or in person. But just knowing someone is thinking about us can certainly mean a lot. No doubt if someone is convinced that no one is thinking about them can bring about deep loneliness.
While it is certainly encouraging to know that people are thinking of us, how much more so to realize that God is thinking of each of us. In our reading today we come to a very familiar Psalm and in it we read to verses that speak to this wonderful truth. Psalm 40:5 reads, “Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.” And again in verse 17, “But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.” I love that verse and the middle phrase, “yet the Lord thinketh upon me.” If we pause to think about that a second………we, poor and rebellious people, yet the Lord thinks about us. Wow!
What a wonderful truth to dwell upon is this time of civil, physical and financial unrest: God thinks about me. Scripture is replete with verses that drive this point home. God didn’t just make us, save us and then leave us to wander through this life alone. No, whether we chose to realize it or not he is intricately involved in the affairs of my life and is working all things out for my good and His glory. So the next time you are feeling alone and wondering if anyone is thinking of you, remember, God is!
