We often hear people say when one dies they are in a better place. As crazy as this world is, I have to agree. Paul confirms that it’s better in Philippians 1:21-23, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better.” This is a prime example of a Scripture that is taken out of context often. One of the questions we must ask, when reading Scripture, is who is it referring to. In this case, Paul is referring to himself, but there is a secondary application. Paul knows that he has given his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He has asked for forgiveness, repented and named Jesus the Lord of his life. Therefore he can confidently proclaim that on earth he is in a dire strait, but upon death he will be with with Christ (which is far better). And anyone who has done the same can likewise proclaim. So unless a person has personally received the Saviour, they may not be in a better place!
Today our world is full of gurus telling us how to get here or there in “an afterlife”. People buy books by the thousands to try and find out where to go. They will believe that garbage in a New York minute, but not the Bible that is the only Book that contains the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The Bible is the best selling book; yet the least read. What a shame. The other books containing worldly wisdom should be used to blow our noses on. They are trash and full of Satan’s lies. These maybe harsh words, but they are truthful and come from someone not afraid to tell it like it is! Don’t waste your time and wind up in the wrong eternal destination. It’s simple, there are only two destinations-Heaven or Hell and it is solely our choice as to where we go.
There were a couple times where I was in a ‘strait betwixt two’. Being honest, the only thing that had an earthly attraction was my family (and cats). Otherwise, I would have been all in to go unto Christ. Someday, I realize, I won’t have the choice. I will sorely miss those I left behind, but as Paul says, “…with Christ; which is far better.” If you are family, friend or foe to me-will you do, as Paul, myself and countless others have done? Will you accept Jesus into your lives. Follow the command in God’s Book at John 3:3, “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
