Joseph and Donna Childers – Grenada

Joseph and Donna Childers – Grenada

It is one of the smallest independent countries in the western hemisphere and was named “Mayo” by Italian explorer Vespucci. The current name, Grenada, is credited to Spanish explorers and sounds much nicer! As the symbol of the pod on its flag represents, it is a leading exporter of nutmeg and is known as the “Island of Spice.” All seven islands are on the edge of the hurricane belt which means the season lasts from June to November. Mount Saint Catherine on the island and Kick ‘em Jenny, an active submarine volcano a few yards from the coastline, are two volcanos found in Grenada. In 1983, the U.S. led an operation, code- named Operation Urgent Fury, and intervened during a government revolt by capturing key governmental Marxists and Cuban advisers which allowed the rule of law to be restored.
