The Big Appointment

The Big Appointment

Appointments.  We all have them, some to look forward to and other’s….not so much.  And how we keep track of those appointments differ from person to person.  Some of us might be “old school” and write down the appointment on a big calendar hanging on the refrigerator or laying on a desk while many of will use our phones help us keep track of our scheduled appointments.  At my job, my work calendar is setup with my email and will give me a 15 minute reminder “ding” before the scheduled time for my meeting or conference call.  Most of the time I don’t need that reminder but once in awhile when I hear that “ding”, I look up in a panic wondering what meeting I have in 15 minutes (and hoping I am reasonably prepared for it!)

While most of our appointments come and go without much effect on our overall lives, our reading today reminds us of an appointment  that we all will have one day.  Hebrews 9:27 says, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”   This verse reminds us of something we already know but serves as a start reminder in the business of our daily lives.  God has ordained that, with the exception of those believers who will be alive during the rapture, all men have an appointment with death. And unlike the 15 minute-reminder “ding” I have on my work computer, God doesn’t give us the foreknowledge of when that day will come.  But essentially I have an appointment on my life calendar that says,”death.”   I know that’s a rather morbid thought, but isn’t that true?  And as most of us are aware, death doesn’t just end it all but instead it sets the stage for the judgement.  A judgement that will determine our eternal destiny based on what we have done with Jesus Christ and furthermore, our reward or punishment within heaven and hell based on how we have lived.  So while we want to rejoice in the days that God gives us and live our lives to the fullest, we also want to remember the fact that both we and every living soul around us has an appointment with death and needs to make sure we/they are ready for it!
