What is the safest place in the world? Is it an underground nuclear bomb shelter, Fort Knox, or a high-security military base? Is it one of the top -ten “safest-countries” as ranked by USNEWS.COM? If so, then we should pack up and move to either New Zealand, Switzerland, Denmark, Canada, or one of the other top ten “safest-countries” in the world. Mankind longs for protection and security. Even politicians who call for the elimination of gun ownership, usually have some sort of armed guard or security in place to keep them safe. Mankind longs for safety and protection but is looking in all the wrong places. True protection and security is only found in God.
Psalm 91 tells us, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (v. 1). The Psalmist recognized that God is the only reliable and impenetrable “refuge and…fortress” (v. 2). Therefore, he chose to trust in God’s protection, rather than trusting in the man-made “secure” structures. Because he made God his refuge, he had no need to “be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday” (vv. 5-6). All the fears that arise in the heart of man are needless to the man who puts his trust in God. When the shadow of disease, destruction, and death creep toward the man who has found God as his refuge, he is able to be at peace as the shadow of the Almighty overcomes the transient and dark shadows of life.
Notice that the promise of God’s protective shadow comes to those who choose to dwell in the secret place of the most High. This promise does not apply to those who only visit the secret place once every week at church. This promise does not apply to those who run to the secret place of the most High only when they are in danger. Rather, this promise is given to those who dwell in the presence of God, not those who merely visit occasionally. We are to dwell in God’s presence. This is where we must find true security and protection. This is where God meets us and guides and gives us wisdom.
Many people run to the shadows offered by the world to find security in life, rather than running to the shadow of God’s protective care. Some run to the shadow of IRA’s, alarm systems, relationships, gambling, drinking, isolation, or a host of other “shadows” that can provide no lasting and true security in life. Our security in life is to be found in the secret place of the most High, our refuge and our fortress, our habitation. The only safe and impenetrable fortress to which we must flee is to the protection offered by God. His abiding presence is the safest place in the world!
