This World is Not Our Home
by Ray Harmer
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee” (Ps. 91:1-7). This Psalm has walked with me through many shadowy valleys. It adorns our living room wall. I have just to look at it and memories of when God protected me flood my mind.
This protection is only available to the child of God. It sounds as though God’s protection will keep us alive forever. Will we never die? The answer is, of course we will die! God can and will protect us, but it is up to Him when He calls us home. God will protect us here until He is ready for us up there.
We all have life verses and this one was my “occupational” life verse. God gave me this Psalm in prayer one day. Daily before I left the police station lot, I would read Psalm 91 and receive comfort that no matter what may happen I was in His hands and He had my six. There were times I couldn’t read it; having to “jump” into it right away. But, I would meditate on it as I drove to the problem. I knew I may pay the ultimate, but I knew we were in it together (“For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone,” Ps. 91:11-12). I could tell a thousand stories of God’s protection. I have proved Him o’er and o’er.
Psalm 91 assures us when our time on Earth is over; our time in Heaven has just begun. The sweetest scent I ever smelled was when I came home from work, cracked the door and was hit with the smell of home sweet home! But, can you imagine with me, a sweeter aroma in our Heavenly Home? Upon our death, Heaven’s Gate will open and we will experience the aroma of our Saviour and will be pleased as the Father is. “For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish” (2 Cor. 2:15). Then we will know we made it home safely!
