(Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:) Judah's answer to Jeremiah's direction from God is baffling at this moment. Judah has just requested Jeremiah in the last chapter to enquire of the Lord for them whether or not to stay in Israel. The conditions of Judah are dire and this decision could mean life or death for the remnant of Judah. Will Judah humbly follow God's directions of not going into Egypt? Jeremiah already knows the heart of the people and tells them that they will not obey in 42:21. Why will Judah not believe God's warning? We learn that the men of Judah are very proud and will solve their problems their way. They even accuse Jeremiah of speaking falsely which is exactly what Gedaliah said to Johanan's warning in chapter 40:16, "For thou speakest falsely of Ishmael." Gedaliah didn't take Johanan's warning of Ishmael's plan to kill Gedaliah seriously. Now Johanan and all the proud men of Judah are not taking God's warning seriously to not go into Egypt. There is nothing Jeremiah can do as he is taken to Egypt except prophecy of Judah's impending doom. God will now, not only judge Judah, but all of Egypt as well. Judah's pride has continually led them to disaster as they seek peace and safety. ”So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.” The word ‘Tahpanhes’ means “thou will fill hands with pity”. It is exactly what Judah is looking for, pity from Egypt and God. God's message to Jeremiah is the total opposite! Judah will now experience more destruction as Babylon will not spend much effort to conquer Egypt. “...he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.” Judah will once again witness the fall of another nation that worshipped false gods as they continue worshipping false gods themselves. God is continually showing Judah that he is the only true God to humbly serve to find peace and prosperity. Psalms 40: 4 “Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” Will we listen to God's word and humbly seek His eternal plan for our lives? How much needless destruction from our pride will we have to see like Judah before we surrender to God?
