How many of us would begin our vacation trip without mapping out the directions to our destination before we begin? In today’s world we are fortunate to have technology (e.g., GPS, smart phone apps, etc.) that can be set up prior to beginning our journey to help avoid making the wrong turn or even getting lost.

Similarly, and more importantly, we need to begin each day waiting for directions from the Lord. In Ps 5:2-3, David presents a wonderful example when he prays, “Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: For unto thee will I pray. My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee and will look up”. So often, we start our day with our own plans “written in concrete” and are not open to even listening to what God may have planned.

Jesus’ directions on the Sermon on the Mount are like a highway code for a life of blessing. Jesus challenges us to be ruthless in dealing with every wrong attitude, thought, word, and action. One area where we certainly need to heed God’s direction every day is our “words.” Our words should be words of blessing, not anger, bitterness, or tearing down. We have all heard the phrase, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” The fact is that words can be very hurtful. Before we speak, we need to consider whether our words are true, kind, and necessary. Today, speak words of wisdom, encouragement, and blessing to others.

Trust God to direct you one step at a time. As we travel the journey of life, we can claim God’s promise that He offers to accompany us and direct us into a life of blessing. All we need to do is go to God in prayer each morning and wait for His directions. Fix your eyes on God daily and see things from His perspective.
