Today we live in a “noisy” world filled with many voices that come to us on TV, radio, the internet, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, email and text messages. We also have the voices of family and friends and sometimes the voice of Satan tempting us to disbelieve God’s word. How do we hear God’s voice in the midst of the noise and distractions of life?

The main way God speaks to us is through His teachings and commands in the scriptures. Learning and memorizing Bible verses is one of the ways we can write God’s word on the ‘Tablet of our Heart.’  Each week Pastor Dan emphasizes the importance of Bible verse memorization to those attending “Men in the Word” study.

Chapter 3 of Proverbs provides some God-inspired verses that warrant memorization to keep us on track. In verses 5-7 we read, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.”

Rather than becoming arrogant and thinking we are clever, we are directed to trust in God. Fear of God, in the sense of healthy respect and reverence for Him, should cause us to: Run to God! Run from evil!

In verses 9 and 10 Solomon gives wise instruction about becoming a generous giver. It really does matter how we manage and spend our money, remembering that we are only stewards of what God has entrusted us with. In verse 9 we read, “Give God the first and the best” (that is, the first part of our income, not the last). If we get our giving right, we will be able to claim God’s promise that He will supply all our needs.

Communication with God is a wonderful privilege we all have. However, sometimes we do all the talking and we don’t actually listen to Him. But our relationship with God is largely dependent on our communication with Him and is meant to be a two-way conversation. Today is a good time to start to listen to God’s voice as He reveals certain scripture to be ingrained on the ‘Tablet of our Heart’. Besides providing daily reminders of how we should live, we can draw on such scripture memorization when we have the opportunity to share the Good News of Christ with others.
