“Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;” (2 Thessalonians 2:1-3). Somebody had confused the Thessalonians. Some heeded a cunning plan and thought the ‘Rapture’ had occurred; with them left behind. Imagine the confusion! It’s important to realize there are ‘wolves’ that want to disrupt the truth of God. This type of person always claims they have special revelation from God. They haven’t heard from God at all. If they did. they would be shaking in their boots for fear of judgment. Never listen to anything that contradicts Scripture.
I started out this morning in thick fog. I couldn’t see twenty feet in front of me. Then the road I was on went under a dense canopy of evergreens. It was dark. After about two miles, I suddenly saw a blinding flash of light. I thought, did the Lord just come? Nonetheless, I continued on and thought what if I didn’t make it? That’s what the Thessalonians were tossing around. Only one problem. I was the only one around and had no idea if I was left! I finally saw a car, but thought maybe they are unsaved and wouldn’t have went. It sounds crazy, but I wouldn’t know if I were left behind until I saw another Christian. An hour later, I was home and my wife was indeed there. So safe I was.
Certainly, I took some liberty with that story. About the same amount those liars, mentioned in our text, did. Remember Scripture interprets Scripture. All they had to do was remember back to what God told them shortly before. “But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Th. 4:13-17).
