How many times have we heard the words ‘go on at your own risk’? Or, ‘go ahead, it’ll be your demise if you continue on’. We’ve been warned but continue on in the wrong direction. This is what God is saying in Proverbs 8:36, “But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.” Think of it, when we sin we wrong our own souls. It does not affect God’s character or His divine plan one iota. Of course God doesn’t wish us to do so and it grieves Him to see humanity go in the wrong direction. But remember God has made provision for the human race in the form of His Son- Jesus Christ!
We’re surrounded by those who reject Christ (God). It worsens as the generations pass. If we’re not careful though, we can develop a ‘better than them attitude’. We are no better as Romans 3:9-10 states, “What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.” We must remind ourselves where we came from. I can think of times when I mocked the things of God and scorned His people. Yet He did not give up on me and we should not regarding those scorners that walk apart from God today.
Many years ago, there was a lady in center city Philadelphia that was a street evangelist. Back then I used to think her a kook, because only a nut would brave the elements year round. Yet she pressed on telling others, loudly, about a Saviour. Every time I went by she locked eyes with me and they seemed to pierce my soul. Many a morning I tried to sneak by in the crowd, but she most always got me. Waving a finger at me and saying things like- “you need Him”, y”must be born-again”, “get saved”, and the whole time holding big signs with Bible verses on them. Like many today, myself and others laughed at her (wronging our own souls).
Not only do people verbally denounce Christ, but many do so by their actions. Most do things that make it clear they have no regard for God. In our day to day conversations we encounter those who mock or try to disprove God. We must remember it is to their own peril (they wrong their own souls. Vs:36). And it doesn’t matter one bit what they say or do because the end of vs: 36 states, “… all they that hate me love death.” According to Scripture they have been served. They navigate blindly in a sin-darkened world; albeit, a light shines at the end of a tunnel (Jesus). Yet man runs from it wronging their own souls!
