While God certainly had certainly used this man to impact the world for Christ, Billy Graham was asked in an interview in 1997 what would happen to people when they died if they had never heard the gospel or the name of Christ. He responded, “I think everybody that loves Christ, or knows Christ, whether they’re conscious of it or not, they’re members of the Body of Christ…God’s purpose for this age
is to call out a people for His name. And that’s what God is doing today, He’s calling people out of the world for His name, whether they come from the Muslim world, or the Buddhist world, or the Christian world or the non-believing world, they are members of
the Body of Christ because they’ve been called by God. They may not even know the name of Jesus but they know in their hearts that they need something that they don’t have, and they turn to the only light that they have, and I think that they are saved, and that they’re going to be with us in heaven.” I know there are many others in various Christian circles who will express the same sentiment- that being that God will somehow allow people into heaven who have never even heard the name of Christ.
However, our reading today brings us to Hebrews 7:25 which says, “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him.” Who is it that are saved? Those who come to God through Jesus Christ! This verse is a parallel passage to the more popular John 14:6 in which Jesus emphatically states the “no one comes unto the Father but by Him.” Yes it is a narrow way of thinking and may even stand in opposition to other professing Christians, but these verses make it clear that no one will see God’s heaven unless they come through Jesus Christ. And while I’m sure we would all agree that we would love to see people from un-reached tribes and nations reach heaven, there is simply no passages of Scripture that can offer us this hope. I think there are certainly some verses that imply that their punishment in hell may not be as severe as it will be for others, but we can get around the truth that salvation is ONLY through Christ. May we have this truth affirmed in our minds!
