The cost of bread has increased through the years (like everything else). I remember my father, when I was young, complaining when bread was twenty-five cents a loaf (in his time it was a nickel). You should hear him now! I think we would all agree, but that’s life. Who would’ve ever thought the bread aisle would be as complicated as a car lot in making a decision? My, they have all sizes, shapes, colors, flavors, consistencies; you name it. Prices range from the generic loaves to artisan loaves made by those in the hoosegow. Let me tell you, the pen bread is excellent, but not worth the almost six bucks they get for it. What can an inmate do that Stroehmann’s can’t?
The Bible refers to bread frequently and in the reading this morning it is concerning Jesus- the Bread of Life. You see my friend, we all have partook of earthly bread, but it never satisfies fully. Eat some at breakfast and we are ready to go for more hours later. Not so with the Saviour. “And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). Backing up to verse 27, we see the point of these verses on the bread of life. “Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed”. You see we all toil and labor for the bread that sustains our bodies and fills our bellies, but many do not give any regard to the everlasting Bread- Jesus. Now granted we have to work to provide for each other, but let us not get so wrapped up in the pursuit that we miss eternity.
Just as there are many differing kinds of bread, there are many differing kinds of “religion”. Most say 4200-4300 different religions. My, I think half of them are types of Baptists! I would like to specify this is not about what religion we call ourselves, but who we follow. There are many in good churches today that are still eating the wrong bread. Jesus specifically said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world” (John 6:47-51). Before we leave planet Earth, it is imperative we eat the True Bread! I, for one, do not like burnt toast.
